McDonald’s – Carrot Stick Christmas
McDonald’s have moved back to basics with their Christmas advert. Its last campaign stirred up controversy for showing a child bereavement storyline. They received a lot of complaints so McDonald’s were forced to withdraw the advert. Their new advert features a young girl saving the last carrot stick for one of Santa’s reindeer. The ad ties in with the launch of McDonald’s Christmas menu.
M&S – Paddington and the Christmas visitor
M&S’s advert coincides with the release of Paddington 2. It sees Paddington Bear saves Christmas by helping a burglar return all the items he stole back to their rightful owners. According to a facial-tracking study, this advert was among the most engaging Christmas ads of the year.
Tesco – Turkey, every which way
Tesco has a launched a series of Christmas ads. The first is all about the different ways families cook a turkey. The idea is to embrace the various ways we celebrate Christmas, as there’s an emphasis on diversity. At the same time, it advertises that Tesco is the best place to buy a turkey this Christmas. It’s a simple strategy with a timely tagline – “Everybody’s welcome”.
John Lewis – Moz the Monster
The nation has come to expect a tear-jerking Christmas ad from John Lewis. This year, the John Lewis advert is a two-minute tale of a monster and a little boy. Set to the Beatles cover of Golden Slumbers, it’s in the tradition of Christmas stories. Also, it’s the idea that Christmas spirit can transform monsters. Think Ebenezer Scrooge!
