AI Overviews sits on top of the same index and the same ranking systems that decide your organic position — it is Google grounding an answer in Google Search, then citing the pages that already have footing there. Gemini, as a standalone assistant, does the same grounding. That’s the opportunity and the constraint: you can’t optimise for AI Overviews as something separate from SEO, because it isn’t separate. This page is about the layer that sits on top of ranking well — being one of the sources Google’s synthesis actually pulls from and names.
How Gemini and AI Overviews actually pick sources
AI Overviews and Gemini are the closest of the major assistants to classic search, because they draw directly on Google’s index and its existing ranking signals. In practice this means being in the top ten for the sub-questions behind a prompt matters more than being first for the head term — Google decomposes a query into a fan-out of related questions, retrieves candidates for each, and synthesises across whichever pages already rank for those sub-questions. A page that ranks #1 for your head keyword but ignores the surrounding questions can be invisible in the Overview; a page ranking #6-8 across several fan-out queries can end up cited.
This is also the assistant relationship where the basics you already maintain for organic SEO carry over almost unchanged: server-rendered content, clean canonicals, working structured data, a crawlable site. AI Overviews and Gemini use the same crawlers and largely the same retrieval infrastructure as classic Search, so technical SEO debt shows up here directly, not as a separate AI-readiness checklist.
What’s included
Fan-out mapping against your commercial prompts. We map the sub-questions Google decomposes your target queries into — comparisons, “is it worth it”, pricing, eligibility, alternatives — and build content depth against each one, not just the head term.
AI Overviews and Gemini-specific tracking. A fixed prompt set, re-run on a schedule, recording whether an AI Overview appears, which domains it cites, whether you’re named, and how Gemini answers the same prompt as a standalone assistant.
Technical grounding checks. Because AI Overviews shares Google’s crawl and index infrastructure with organic Search, we audit server-side rendering, canonical hygiene and structured data as part of this work — the same technical foundation, checked against AI Overview eligibility specifically rather than only ranking.
Answer-shaped content blocks and entity work, applied at the depth this engine rewards: self-contained answers under fan-out-matched headings, and a coherent, consistently stated entity across your site — the baseline GEO method, scoped here to what actually moves Google’s synthesis rather than repeated wholesale from our other engine pages.
The nine changes that moved citation share, with the two that matter most for Google’s system foregrounded: keeping content in server-rendered HTML, and building one page per fan-out question rather than one page trying to cover a whole topic.
Proof
Official London Theatre reached 85% AI search visibility and the #1 recommended source position in its category, tracked across a five-year partnership, alongside a 67% increase in referral traffic. AI Overviews visibility is part of that combined figure.
Koyo Loans took a #1-3 ranking for “loans” (95% keyword difficulty) with a 73% lift in organic conversions — the strongest evidence we have that Google’s classic ranking work and its AI Overview grounding pull from the same underlying strength. We haven’t isolated what share of that traffic came through an AI Overview citation specifically.
Sons is a client we do GEO work for, including on the Google/Gemini side. We’re not publishing prompt-grid or before/after figures for that account until the numbers are sourced and cleared — named here without figures, per house rule.
How we measure it
AI Overview appearance rate. Of your tracked prompt set, how often an AI Overview appears at all for the query — a precondition, since not every query triggers one.
Citation share within Overviews. Of the Overviews that do appear, how often you’re one of the named or linked sources.
Gemini answer consistency. How Gemini, as a standalone assistant, answers the same prompt set, and whether that tracks with or diverges from the Overview result — since the two don’t always agree.

What it costs
There’s no separate AI Overviews invoice. This work is included in every GEO and SEO plan at no extra cost — retainers start from £1,250 a month ex VAT, because the technical and content work that earns an AI Overview citation is the same work that earns the ranking underneath it. Standalone AI Overviews / Gemini-only GEO work with no retainer attached is scoped to the brief, and either side can end it with 60 days’ notice at any point. FAQs (8, visible)
What’s the difference between ranking well and appearing in an AI Overview?
Ranking wins a click from someone already looking at a results page. An AI Overview citation wins the recommendation before any list of links appears, and it’s earned by ranking for the sub-questions behind a query, not just the head term.
Do I need to do anything different for Gemini versus AI Overviews?
Mostly no — both draw on Google’s index and largely agree, since AI Overviews is Google grounding its answer in Search. Where they diverge, it’s usually because Gemini as a standalone assistant is drawing on a slightly different retrieval pass; we track both and report where they disagree.
Can I pay to appear in an AI Overview?
No. There’s no paid placement in the organic part of an AI Overview and no submission process. Google is testing separate advertising formats around AI experiences — that’s ad inventory, not a way to buy a citation.
Why does a page that ranks #1 for my main keyword not appear in the Overview?
Because Overviews synthesise across sub-questions, not the head term alone. A page can dominate the main keyword and still say nothing about the comparison, pricing or eligibility questions the Overview is actually drawing on.
Does structured data get me into AI Overviews?
It helps Google understand what your page and organisation are, and it’s cheap to get right, but it isn’t a citation lever by itself. Check what your pages currently carry with our schema report.
How long before I see a change in AI Overview appearances?
Faster than a full ranking recovery in some cases, because AI Overviews can pick up newly clear passages from already-indexed pages within weeks. Where the gap is fan-out coverage or technical rendering, expect three to six months.
Do I need llms.txt for Google’s AI Overviews?
No — it isn’t part of how Google’s Overviews decide what to cite, since they’re grounded in the standard Search index and crawl, not a separate file. If you want one for completeness across engines, it takes an afternoon; it isn’t a deliverable we scope work around.
Will fixing my Core Web Vitals help with AI Overviews?
Indirectly. Overviews use the same crawl and index as organic Search, so anything that improves crawlability and indexing — including render performance — removes a barrier to being retrieved at all. It doesn’t directly improve which retrieved page gets cited.
